Does Medicare Cover Bathroom Remodels?
While Medicare does not cover full bathroom remodeling projects, it will offer coverage for certain medically-necessary equipment.
This is covered under Part B, which encompasses Durable Medical Equipment. Understanding these distinctions and what equipment may be covered will undoubtedly streamline your remodel process.
What Bathroom Safety Equipment Will Medicare Cover?
The majority of Medicare plans will not cover bathroom safety equipment, as they can be seen as convenience items instead of medical devices. The bathroom safety equipment must be considered medically necessary before Medicare will consider covering it.
However, certain plans can make exceptions depending on the specific equipment. Typically, the items must be durable, prescribed by a doctor, and intended for regular home use. They should not be utilized by an individual who is not sick or injured and should have a projected lifespan of at least three years.
Depending on your specific medical needs and plans, Medicare may cover a partial or full reimbursement for the following:
- Grab bars.
- Shower chairs.
- Walk-in tubs or showers for individuals who cannot use normal models.
- Raised toilet seats if individuals are unable to transfer in and out of the tub.
- Bedside commode if individuals cannot use the toilet in the bathroom.

Does Medicare Cover Walk-In Tubs?
In some cases, Medicare may cover specific Durable Medical Equipment (DME). However, Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, will not typically consider a walk-tub to be a durable medical equipment. By Medicare’s definition, items primarily used for convenience, self-help, or personal comfort are not medically necessary equipment.
By this definition, a walk-in tub would not be covered by Medicare. However, if you are eligible for Medicaid, your state’s specific program may offer some financial assistance for a walk-in tub.
